What are the different NCGL membership types?

There are two membership types.

Regular Membership: Regular Members are entitled to play in any league events except the season playoffs and may participate in any money prizes if they buy-in.

Championship Membership: Championship Members have all the benefits of the Regular Membership plus they earn points in regular season league events to try to qualify for the season playoffs. Playoff qualifiers play in the league playoff events to try to become the season champion.

What are the costs and payouts in the NCGL.

The membership fees for the season are $15 for Regular Members and $125 for Championship Members. However Championship Members who pay their dues before the end of February 2024 need only pay the discounted fee of $100. $11 of each membership goes to pay for the GolfLeagueSite website and app. Approximately $100 of league expenses each season are paid next. All the remaining funds go into the season prize fund.

For all members: Each league event with the minimum number of 6 players, whether it is a season or off-season event, will have an event prize fund where members can buy-in and be awarded prizes from that event prize fund for that event. The buy-in for an event is $20 per member or $40 per member for majors and playoffs. 10% of the event prize fund goes to the season prize fund. The remaining 90% of the event prize fund is awarded for that event, split evenly with half awarded to the top three net scores (adjusted for handicap - 100% handicap if there are less than 30 players and 95% if there are more) and ties with 1st=60%, 2nd=25%, 3rd=15%; and half towards net skins (with 100% handicap, split between two flights by handicap in each event) with no rollover.

For Championship Members only: The season prize fund is awarded as follows:

  • 5% goes to the Championship Member(s) with the most points at the end of the regular season.
  • 60% goes to the champ in the playoff finals.
  • 20% goes to 2nd place in the playoff finals.
  • 10% goes to 3rd place in the playoff finals.
  • 5% goes to 4th place in the playoff finals.
Our league sponsor, Garrand Landscape Lighting, will pay for the hotel and golf course fees for the Championship Members that make the playoff final. However, they have to show up at the finals to get any of it. Any money not awarded due to no-show(s) will be prorated and awarded to the other players in the finals.

How do I get started and become a member of the NCGL?

If you are a new member or a previous member not already on the roster for the season, you need to register in the league on this website and pay the membership fee (which is done separately from this website). Previous members already on the roster for the season just need to pay their membership fee.

Take the following steps to register for NCGL membership.

  1. Go to the NCGL home page on this website (https://www.golfleaguesite.com/home?league_id=77) and click on Register Here in the menu.
  2. Fill out and submit the registration form. Note that, if you have one, you should enter in the form your current WHS Handicap Index from a verifiable source. If you don't have one, enter your best estimate.
  3. You will get an email to verify your email address.
  4. Click on the Verify Your Account button in the email. This will get you to your profile page.
  5. Click on the Edit Profile button.
  6. Click on the Create a Password button and then enter and Submit your password.

Now you are registered and can begin using your account. Contact one of the League Managers to arrange to pay your membership fee.

VERY IMPORTANT: New members must have 3 qualifying rounds before they can compete for prizes or points in any NCGL event. See Competition Qualifying Rules on the Rules page.

You should also at this point install the GolfLeagueSite (GLS) app on your mobile device. It contains many of the same functions as the website and is also used for live scoring during NCGL events.

How do I signup for a league event?

If you received an automated notification of the event, you can use the notification to get to the signup page for the event.  You can also get to the event signup either (1) via the Schedule tile on the NCGL home page or in the app or (2) via the Sign Up tile in the app.

Signup is pretty self-explanatory but after signing up a player must be sure to click on the white dialog balloon icon next to their name to add comments specifying what day that player will be playing (Saturday or Sunday). And the player may also add special requests such as "I want to play with Tiger Woods" or "I need to be in an early group because I'm going to a wild party after at DP's house."

What tee boxes are played?

Starting with Season 7, League Managers will assign tee boxes to each player for each event based on that player's league handicap index, instead of the player choosing it. Each player will be assigned the tee box with the highest bogey rating less than or equal to (291 - handicap index) / 3, or if none exists, the tee box with the lowest bogey rating. See https://ncrdb.usga.org for bogey ratings.

As an example, using the men's tees at Sherman Hills Golf & Country Club:

Tee Box Bogey Rating Yards Low H.I. High H.I.
Black 95.4 6794 4.7
Blue 91.6 6314 4.8 16.2
White 88.1 5733 16.3 26.7
Gold 84.0 5020 26.8
How do I use Live Scoring in the GolfLeagueSite (GLS) app?

Here are some notes when in scoring mode (the first/flagstick icon at the top).

  • The tee box shown at the top is the main one selected for the group.  The par, yardage and hole handicap shown at the top are for that tee box.  Any individual player with a different tee box than the group will show a one-letter abbreviation of their tee box after their name.
  • Total gross scores (compared to par) are shown after each player's name.  Total net scores can be viewed in leaderboard mode (the third/list icon at the top).
  • The asterisks next to each hole score represents the number of handicap strokes for that player that hole.  Red asterisks represent Plus handicap strokes.
  • When a player doesn't complete a hole for any reason, the score for that hole should be entered as an "X", which is done by subtracting from a score of 1. Be aware that any uncompleted holes will drop a player to a bottom ranking for that event.
  • If scores need to be changed for one or more players in the group after scores for a hole have been saved, go back to that hole and click on the Clear button. Note that ALL scores for the group for that hole will then be cleared and will have to be re-entered.
  • If you need to change the players in the group that are playing or the tee box a player in the group is using (which are entered at the start of the round), click on the delete button on any hole.  Note that ALL scores for ALL holes for the group will then be deleted and will have to be re-entered.
  • When scores for the group for all holes have been saved, or when the Review button is clicked, the review screen will be displayed.  On the review screen, if no changes are needed, click on the Submit button (note that scores can be unsubmitted up until they are confirmed by a League Manager).  If changes are needed, click on the back arrow to return and make the changes.

You should try to have at least two scorekeepers using GLS Live Scoring in each foursome group.  GLS will then let the scorekeepers know in real-time when there is a scoring discrepancy and they can fix it right away.  In any case, it is the responsibility of all players in the group to make sure the scores submitted in the GLS app are accurate. The League Managers will accept all scores as submitted in the app and will only question the results if there is a discrepancy between two or more submitted scores.

How do Championship Members accumulate points and how do the playoffs work?

During the regular season, Championship Members play their way into the playoffs by earning points in each 21 regular season events based on the place they finish. First place gets points equal to the number of Championship Members on the whole roster at the time of the event, plus 9 points. Each place below first gets 1 point less than the one above. In addition, the Championship Member(s) finishing on top in each event get a 5 point bonus. Ties split the points evenly for the places finished. Events designated as Majors have increased point values as specified in the event description. Each member’s best 13 points events are accumulated for the regular season to determine overall points standings. The more you play, the better your chances of making the playoffs. The top 12 in the points standings from the regular season are eligible to compete in the first playoff event.

After the regular season ends, at the beginning of the playoffs, playoff points are awarded to members based on their finish in the regular season:

  • The member with the lowest regular season points in the standings will get assigned 2 playoff points for the playoffs.  The next lowest player will get assigned 4 playoff points and then each higher player will get 2 playoff points more than the one lower.  Playoff points for regular season total point ties are calculated just like ties in regular season events.
  • In addition, the top 8 players in the regular season points standings will get Top 8 Bonus Points.  The player in position 1 would get 8 bonus points.  The player in position 2 would get 7 bonus points, and so on, with the player in position 8 getting 1 bonus point.  Ties work the same as normal playoff points.

For the first two playoff events, playoff points are awarded similarly to the regular season but doubled. And these points are added to the previously-earned playoff points. This gives a playoff advantage to those with a better regular season finish but also gives everyone in these playoff events a chance to get into the finals.

The top 8 after the first playoff event move on to the second playoff event. The top 4 finishers in that event go on to the Championship Finals with the HUGE advantage of extra handicap allowance strokes in the finals based on their finish position. All the players in the finals compete in the 2-day NCGL Championship at a premier golf facility.
