What's the purpose of this league?
This league has been around for more than 20 years. The league serves as an opportunity for women to play golf Tuesday mornings between May and September in a slightly competitive environment at Laytonsville Golf Course. We play 18 holes and primarily use net scoring. The league website handles creating and tracking handicaps for the league. We also have "closest to the pin", fewest putts, and most fairways each week. We don't have many other "games" or competitions associated with the league. We try to have shotgun starts a few times each summer so that everyone can gather together afterwards for lunch - and meet other people in the league. We use Golf League Site for signing up for tee times and tracking scores and handicaps. There is an informational meeting before the league season (typically in April or possibly March) and an end-of-season banquet (typically in October).
When does the league play? and how much does it cost?
The League plays Tuesday mornings from May through the end of September. Tee times range from about 9 through 10:15 or so (depending on the size of the league). Usually we try and reserve some tee times in late April for those who want to get a jump start on the season. The cost is approximately $80, which covers the league website, a few lunches after golf, and the end-of-season banquet, as well as prizes and awards.
How do I record "Putts"?
A "putt" is anytime you strike the ball while it is on the putting surface (the green). So if you are on the green, putt off the green, and then use your putter and put it into the hole, you have actually only putted once (the first stroke when on the green).
Is there an email list for league information?
Yes - just email Barb@ships3.com to be added (or removed) from the email list.
How can I join the league? How is the money handled?
Feel free to review the FAQs here to get more information, or email the league manager, Barb Ship, at Barb@ships3.com. The league's money is managed by Laytonsville Golf Course. They will collect the dues prior to the season and they distribute the awards at the end of the season (in the form of gift cards for the MCG Golf shops).
Can I enter scores using the GolfLeagueSite.com website, or must I use the Golf League Site app?
In order to enter scores (as well as putts and fairways) and have them count in the league, you MUST use the app. This cannot be done using the computer - it must be the app. Use the Live Scoring button.
How can I enter scores either during the round or after the round?
You need to use the app (not the website). Click on "Live Scoring." It's best if one person in the foursome enters all the scores from the foursome. If, however, you want to individually enter your scores, you MUST UNCHECK the other players in the foursome. Otherwise it totally screws things up!!! As a last resort, the league manager (Barb) can enter your scores if you leave your scorecard with the proshop or send her a photo of the scorecard. If that's the case, send Barb an email so she knows to look for your scorecard.
When can I make a tee time for the league?
The tee times open up at 7 AM on Tuesday morning 2 weeks before the league play date. At 9 AM on the Saturday immediately preceding the league play date, the online tee times closes. So after 9 AM on Saturday, if you want to change your tee time or cancel (or add a tee time), you must call the pro shop.
What happens if I try and sign up for a tee time and all the slots are filled?
The app will create a "waiting list." If someone cancels before the online sign-up closes, you will be slotted into their slot automatically. If no one cancels, we will squeeze in an extra foursome (or 3 or 2) at some point during the block of time allotted to the league.
I was originally scheduled to play on Tuesday but after Saturday at 9 AM when the tee times online closed, I called the pro shop to cancel. Is there anything else I need to do?
If you cancel after Saturday AM 6 AM, please send Barb an email so she knows you didn't play.
Which hole is used for the "closest to the pin" contest.
Hole #5
For Closest to the Pin, do I need to be on the green?
Yes!
Can I play any time during the day on Tuesday or must it be during the league slots?
You can play at any time during the day and have it count for the league. It is preferred (although not absolutely required) you play with someone in the league. You can still count fairways and putts but it is likely that the "closest to the pin" marker will be already removed, so you won't be able to participate in that contest. You do need to email Barb (league manager) so that she can "create" a slot for you so you can record your score.
What is the maximum score I can get on a hole?
The maximum score is twice par plus 2. So for a par 3 it's an 8. For a par 4 it's a 10. And for a par 5 it's a 12.
I shot a 10 on a hole but am having difficulty entering that into the Live Scoring. What's the problem?
The app is set up to advance to the next hole once the score is entered. It allows 15 milliseconds to enter a second digit if the score is 2 digits. So you just have to enter both digits quickly.
How can I best see the weekly scores?
The best way to see the weekly scores is to click on "schedule", then the appropriate week, and then the "leaderboard." The "leaderboard" has the ability to see the rankings for best net score (as well as gross score), fairways and putts.
When I am recording my fairways, what do I do on Par 3s?
There is no fairway for a par 3 so simply leave it unchecked.
How are awards given out at the end of the season?
During the course of the season, we track the lowest net scores each week, the fewest putts, the most fairways, and closest to the pin. Each week points are awarded and at the end of the season, those points are used to award gift cards to the pro shop. The league manager keeps track of all the data. Also included in these awards are the results from the end-of-season tournament (lowest net score). Ties are resolved as follows: if two or more people tie for a place during the end-of-season tournament, then the next best round in September is used (if available). If the tie can't be resolved by using rounds in September, then the points are split equally amongst the players. For points awarded for regular weekly play, the points are evenly divided if there is a tie. In addition, there is a plaque that hangs in the pro shop with the lowest gross score during the end-of-season tournament. Once again, if there is a tie, the tie is resolved as above. It the tie can't be resolved, all who are tied have their names inscribed on the plaque.
