Overall Rules
-
When there is any doubt as to whether your ball may have gone out of bounds or may be lost outside a hazard (e.g. in woods), always play a provisional. Make sure: a) to announce that the ball is a provisional (and not a ball in play); b) the provisional is distinguishable from the original in some way (number or marking); and c) announce the difference between the two balls to your competitors on the tee.
-
A lost ball outside a hazard that is not out of bounds (e.g. in woods) is to be played stroke and distance. You must: a) go back and play from the prior hitting area with 1 stroke penalty if you did not play a provisional; b) play your provisional with 1 stroke penalty; or c) you may concede the hole and score according to rule 6 below.
-
A ball hit into an area marked as hazard or treated as a hazard under the local rules above shall be played in accordance with the rules noted above (for areas treated as hazard) or the basic rules of golf (for areas marked as hazard).
-
A ball hit out of bounds is to be played stroke and distance. You must: a) go back and play from the prior hitting area with 1 stroke penalty if you did not play a provisional; b) play your provisional with 1 stroke penalty; or c) you may concede the hole and score according to rule 6 below
-
When conceding a hole, you must score the greater of: a) Your oponents score, plus the number of strokes given, plus one stroke (e.g. if your opponent scores a 5 and you give him a stroke on that hole, your score would be 5 + 1 +1 or 7) ; or b) Your regular maximum hole score given your handicap. Any time you pick up (unless your opponent concedes), you are deemed to have conceded the hole.
-
Only your opponent or his partner may concede putts unless you are already out of the hole. Then you may proceed under rule 6 above.
